The design of The State of Kuwait Embassy Residential Complex in Brasilia received special attention to the historical liaison between traditional Arabic elements and contemporary architecture.
This liaison had to take place in a very subtle and careful manner, allowing the buildings to be taken by Arabic atmosphere but at the same time, preserving its freshness and present-day ideas. Our challenge was to balance both aspects, reaching the precise moment when architecture is able to represent and register its historical time by exerting its ability to balance aesthetics issues, available technologies, cost control, climate contingencies and cultural reflections.
In our project, we reinterpret the traditional Liwan concept, creating a series of archways formed by perforated aluminum panels (contemporary arches).
The main strategy of the proposal is to absorb and utilize the traditional arch and the archways constituted of its regular repetition, as a scheme to create transition spaces, connecting exterior and interior, thus approximating our architectural gesture to the Arabic vernacular.
